Red Bull Flugtag 2010

Photos from Red Bull Flugtag in Kiev, Ukraine.

Red Bull Flugtag challenges teams of everyday people to build homemade, human-powered flying machines and pilot them off a 30-foot high deck in hopes of achieving flight! Flugtag may mean “flying day” in German, but all these crafts ultimately splash into the waters below. They are judged not only on their flight’s distance, but creativity and showmanship as well.

Judges rate the “flyers” on “distance, creativity and showmanship.” Win the contest and you score a trip to Lisbon, Portugal for the “Red Bull Air Race.” Second and third place prizes are a little less “fabulous.” The second place winners get a trip to the Angar-7 aviation museum in Austria, presumably to brush up on their technique for next time. Third place gets a parachute jump for the team. No word on whether they are supplied with working parachutes, or if they have to create their own.
